Running Ink
Can a drop seemingly following the pull of gravity or exposed to centrifugal forces make an artistic mark?
In his running ink series Stephan works with a multiplicity of lines that eliminate themselves as they multiply, but his work also has a radical simplicity. Stephan has embodied the traditional drawing and developed it in his running ink series into a drawing by natural forces that overcomes the boundaries between drawing and painting. It is the concept of space as well as the restriction to the flat surface that charges his works. He seeks to cipher and fix where the line is drawn by gravity that forces the ink to follow, the space it embraces and creates where it begins and ends.
Running ink is what it is and is immediately understood, intuitively and sensually, that is why it deserves to be called abstract realism.
